This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 6th, 2010 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen on the 4th in the Sax-Zim Bog along CR 7, 0.1
to 0.6 mile north of CR 133, but it was not relocated on the 6th. Yann
Kolbeinsson saw one on the 6th in Aitkin County along the Hedbom Road,
2.5 miles west of the east gate. Bill Tefft and others saw a GREAT GRAY
OWL in Lake County on the 1st along MN Highway 1 about 3 miles south of
the Spruce Road.

Chris Edwardson saw a NORTHERN FLICKER at his feeders along East
Arrowhead Road near Woodland Avenue in Duluth. Gordy Martinson saw a
flock of about 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 4th along the Maxwell Road
between Oak Street and Medin Road in Lakewood Township. Jan Kraemer saw
a flock of about 20 on the 3rd along Cedar Avenue in Duluth Heights.
THAYER'S GULLS, ICELAND GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED
GULLS continue to be reported from Canal Park as recently as the 6th.

Kate Kelnberger found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in Cook County on the
5th along the Clearwater Road between the Golden Eagle Lodge Road and
the Needham Road. Matt Mecklenburg saw a female AMERICAN THREE-TOED
WOODPECKER in Lake County on the 1st along the old Tomahawk Road (FR
387) about five miles east of MN Highway 1.

Eighteen species were found on the Isabella CBC on the 1st, including
three BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS and nine BOREAL CHICKADEES. COMMON
REDPOLLS and PINE GROSBEAKS were the only winter finches seen in good
numbers. The northern 1.5 mile of the Stony River Forest Road is plowed,
but the remainder of the road is currently not drivable due to deep
snow.

Twenty-seven species were seen on the Aurora CBC on the 29th, including
11 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on the west side of Biwabik and about 200
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Biwabik and Hoyt Lakes.

A VARIED THRUSH is being seen daily in Aitkin County, and birders
interested in seeing the bird should contact the landowner, Dolores, at
