This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 30,
2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Summer is here, at least for the moment, bringing with it thunderstorms,
and hot temperatures. Birds are very busy feeding the young, and trying
to keep them alive, just like their human neighbors. Flowers are
everywhere.

Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at the
Ponderosa Golf Club in Clay County on June 28.

In Red Lake County, Anita Vettleson has observed a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER
in their yard near Oklee this week.

Here is Pennington County, Teresa Audette, saw a BALD EAGLE flying over
Digi-key this afternoon. On June 25, a pair of PURPLE FINCHES mated in
our yard. I'm still looking for the possible nest. One of our bluebird
houses contains 5 baby EASTERN BLUEBIRDS. Tom Ballard saw some BANK
SWALLOWS in southern Pennington County on June 30.

Thanks to Anita Vettleson, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld, Tom Ballard, and
Teresa Audette for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, July 7,
2011.
