This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 16th, 2014 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen by Jan and Larry Kraemer and others on
the 15th at the Park Point Recreation Area. They also saw 22
RED-THROATED LOONS, two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and three RUDDY DUCKS.
Peder Svingen saw an EARED GREBE on the 11th at Lafayette Square, and 33
RED-THROATED LOONS at 43rd Street on Park Point. Peder also saw a
LONG-TAILED DUCK on the 15th just east of the Lakewood Pumping Station.

Up to three unidentified JAEGERS have been seen out from the dune bridge
at Park Point over the past week. Lars Benson saw an EASTERN TOWHEE on
the 16th at the Recreation Area and a MARBLED GODWIT was seen by several
observers on the 14th and 16th. Shawn Zierman saw 14 WHIMBRELS fly by
the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry on the 14th. Mike Hendrickson
saw a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on the 10th at Southworth Marsh on Park
Point. Mike saw a LARK SPARROW on the 14th at 21st Avenue East and Water
Street.

Gary Leeper saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 11th on the west side of
Two Harbors. A RED-THROATED LOON and four MARBLED GODWITS were seen on
the 12th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. A WESTERN TANAGER was seen on the
15th at a private residence in Duluth Township.

Shawn Conrad found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the 11th in Itasca County
at the junction of CR 144 and CR 128. A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on the
10th at the Cook wastewater treatment ponds, but it has not been
relocated. Bill Tefft saw a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on the 11th at the
Ely softball fields.

Other recent spring arrivals in the past week include SORA, SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, CASPIAN
TERN, COMMON TERN, EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL, CHIMNEY SWIFT, YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, LEAST FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, CLIFF
SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, SEDGE WREN, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S
THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, GRAY CATBIRD, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH,
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, AMERICAN REDSTART, CAPE MAY WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA,
MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, YELLOW
WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, WILSON’S
WARBLER, LE CONTE’S SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, BOBOLINK, and
BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
