Yesterday morning, Katie Brey and I found a Northern Hawk Owl on Stony River
Forest Rd. about 8.3 miles South of Hwy 1. The bird was perched on the
western side of the road and seemed to be actively hunting and remained
perched near the car for about 10 minutes before flying to the other side of
the road and continuing to hunt deeper in the woods. After reading through
previous posts, this is probably one of the birds seen by Dave Alexander.
Other noteworthy sightings included Boreal Chickadees all along the stretch
of Stony River Forest Rd. North of the Whyte Rd. In total, we saw at least 8
individuals mixed in with groups of Black-capped Chickadees. I have never
had such tremendous looks at Boreal Chickadees!
On our travels to Stony River Forest Rd. we also spotted several Ruffed
Grouse while heading North on County Rd. 2 and a group of 11 Pine Grosbeaks
while heading East on Highway 1.
Sadly, we didn't see or hear any other winter finches!
Happy Holiday Birding!
