This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 12,
2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

There were few reports last week due to the holiday and the very hot
weather. The heat has continued, but several hearty souls were out any
way looking for DICKCISSELS. For you county listers, here is a small
list of DICKCISSELS that were found. In Itasca County on July 7, a
DICKCISSEL was found along CR B north of MN 169; in Koochiching County
one was at the intersection of CR6 and CR17 northeast of Northome;
Kittson County birds were along 320th Ave two miles east of US 59 on CR
51, otherwise known as the Tombstone Highway. In Pennington County one
bird was seen 3.2 miles west of MN 32 on 140th St SW which is the Red
Lake /Pennington County line. In Roseau County, one bird was seen 2.4
miles north of MN11 on CR 28 at the first intersection north of the
Roseau Wastewater Treatment Ponds. All of the above were found by Dennis
and Barb Martin this week.

Gretchen Mehmel and Beth Siverhus found 6 male WILSON'S PHALAROPES on
Brown's Lake in Lake of the Woods County on June 29. Other species seen
there included RED-NECKED GREBE, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BLACK TERN, and LE
CONTE'S SPARROW. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen on the Faunce Road.

In Roseau County , Beth Siverhus saw two EVENING GROSBEAKS at her feeder
in Warroad on July 10. At Warroad Estates north of Warroad, there was a
pair of GREEN HERONS and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.

In Marshall County, at Agassiz NWR, Gregg Knutsen and Craig Mowry found
a COMMON LOON at Farmes Pool on June 28. On July 2, Gregg saw a GREEN
HERON on Agassiz Pool, and on the 5th, he saw a MERLIN just outside the
west boundary at CR 7. The first sightings of duck broods of scaup,
NORTHERN SHOVELER, and RUDDY DUCKS were seen on the refuge.

Bill Blackburn and also Dennis and Barb Martin reported LEAST BITTERNS
and BLACK TERNS in a small wetland at the Red Lake- Pennington County
line just east of CR 10, otherwise known as the Pembina Trail.

Randy Frederickson found 3 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Halstad, Norman
County, on July 9 at the main intersection in town. On July 8, I saw the
HENSLOW'S SPARROW previously reported at Dalby WMA exactly where he
reported it earlier- seven miles east of Borup on CR 39, then north 2
miles to the intersection of 330th St and 140th Ave, and east 0.3 miles.
The bird was on the north side of the road.

Steve Midthune reported from Hamden Slough in Becker County where he
reported many shorebirds at the headquarters pond including both
yellowlegs, dowitcher species, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and WILLETS. At
Bisson Lake there was a non-breeding BONAPARTE'S GULL. Dennis and Barb
Martin found YELLOW RAILS at Hellickson Prairie in Becker County south
of the Waubun Marsh.

Gary and Marion Otnes did some birding in Western Township in Otter Tail
County on July 10 where they found 4 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, DICKCISSELS,
SEDGE WRENS, MARSH WRENS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and
SWAMP SPARROWS.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Bill Blackburn, Barb and Dennis Martin, Gary
and Marion Otnes, Gretchen Mehmel, Randy Frederickson, and Steve
Midthune for their reports.
