This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 10th, 2010 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The VARIED THRUSH in Ely was still present on the 5th on Main Street
across from the Pillow Rock historical marker. A SPRUCE GROUSE was found
by Norma Malinowski on the 10th near the Kawishiwi Pines Scientific and
Natural Area southeast of Ely. Five LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the
10th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.

Tim Lamey reported three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS on the 8th at the mouth of
the Lester River in Duluth. A large flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen
on the 6th along Norwood Street near Hawk Ridge, and another flock was
seen on the 8th in Lester Park. A small flock was seen in Two Harbors on
the 8th along CR 2 (4th Street), 4 blocks north of Highway 61. Flocks
have also been reported recently in Ely and Grand Rapids.

Three BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were found by Jim and Donn Mattsson in
the Sax-Zim Bog on the 4th along the McDavitt Road (CR 233), about 2.5
miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). A HOARY REDPOLL was seen at the
Admiral Road (CR 788) feeders, 3.7 miles north of the Sax Road as
recently as the 7th. Jan Green has seen as many as three HOARY REDPOLLS
on a daily basis at her feeders along the Old North Shore Road (CR 290)
in Duluth Township.

Mike Hendrickson saw two TRUMPETER SWANS on the St. Louis River in west
Duluth on the 10th and Erik Bruhnke heard an early SONG SPARROW on the
4th in Duluth. Other new arrivals during the past week include CANADA
GOOSE, HOODED MERGANSER, MERLIN, and RING-BILLED GULL.
