After a mild week or so, it is again cold in the northwest, although not
as severe as before, and the sun was shining brightly today. Folks have
begun to report some grouse, and some snowy owls in the area.
Woodpeckers are starting to act as if spring is on the way.

In Wilkin County, Kathleen MacAulay saw a GOLDEN EAGLE on January 29.

From Otter Tail County, Wayne Perala reported twenty CEDAR WAXWINGS in
Fergus Falls on January 27. On January 29, Kathleen MacAulay saw an
AMERICAN BLACK DUCK there.

Shelley Steva saw an adult male SNOWY OWL in Polk County near Sherack on
January 26.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was observed by Richard Hoeg in the Big Bog area of
Beltrami County on January 27.

Larry Wilebski found an AMERICAN KESTREL in northern Kittson County on
January 28, and a small flock of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS on January 29.

Beth Siverhus found twelve WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in Roseau County near
the north border of Beltrami Island state forest this week. A GREAT GRAY
OWL was seen at the border of the state forest off CR 5, and thirty
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Warroad this week. She had DARK-EYED
JUNCO at her feeder in Warroad and a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE was also seen.

In Lake of the Woods County, Beth found a GREAT GRAY OWL one mile north
on the Norris-Roosevelt Road near Norris Camp. Other species seen near
the camp included NORTHERN HAWK OWL, SPRUCE GROUSE, GRAY JAYS, PINE
GROSBEAKS, PINE SISKINS, and BLUE JAYS.
