This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 9,
2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You

The last few days have had a hint of fall in them, but the sun has been
shining, and some rain has fallen, making the lawns green up again.
There are lots of young birds at backyard feeders, learning the ropes
from the adults.

Shelley Steva saw two common ravens near Sherack on August 5, a great
egret in the Grand Marais River near East Grand Forks , and two
dickcissels near the intersection of CR 21 and US 75. On the 6th, Sandy
Aubol had a Tennessee warbler in her yard. On August 8, she saw two
red-headed woodpeckers at the East Grand Forks State Recreation area
with three young. 17 chimney swifts were visible from her yard that day,
and a white-throated sparrow made an appearance there.

A pileated woodpecker was observed by Shelley Steva in Thief River
Falls, Pennington County, on August 9.

Two common ravens were seen three miles east of Warren in Marshall
County on August 6.

Beth Siverhus in Warroad, Roseau County, reported a merlin, green heron,
and common terns on August 1. On August 8, black terns, spotted
sandpipers, pileated woodpecker, eastern wood-pewee, white-throated
sparrow, and pine siskins were seen in Roseau County. Gretchen Mehmel
and Jeff Birchem saw a short-eared owl near Cecil's Landing on August 6.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Gretchen Mehmel ,Sandy Aubol, and Shelley Steva
for their reports.
