This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 15,
2015 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been a quiet week bird-wise as many species are diminishing in
numbers in the northwest. Even the sparrows are showing a rapid decrease
in numbers. Today's very cold winds and promise of a hard freeze reminds
us that winter is coming soon.

From Norris Camp in Lake of the Woods County, Gretchen Mehmel reported
that many GRAY JAYS are visiting the Norris Camp feeders to stock up for
the winter ahead.

On October 8, I had one WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, a HARRIS'S SPARROW, many
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and some PURPLE FINCHES in the yard here in
Pennington County. Most of those are gone now except for a few
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, many DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and some of the PURPLE
FINCHES. Shelley Steva had a PILEATED WOODPECKER, DARK-EYED JUNCOS,
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and FOX SPARROWS at her feeder in Thief River
Falls on October 10.

Thanks to Shelley Steva and Gretchen Mehmel for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, October 22,
2015
