This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 10,

Weather in the northwest has been mild and quiet for the part week, but
tonight we are awaiting the first big winter storm. We are hoping for
none of the forecast freezing rain.

Among the species seen in Lake of the Woods County by Shelley Steva and
I on January 5 was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.

In Roseau County we travelled up Dick's Parkway on January 5, over to
Roseau and north on MN 310. Birding was good as we found BALD EAGLE,
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and no less than 6 NORTHERN HAWK
OWLS and two GREAT GRAY OWLS on MN 310 at dusk. Also seen were SNOW
BUNTINGS, and GRAY JAYS.

Larry Wilebski reported his first MOURNING DOVE of the year at his cabin
northwest of Lancaster in Kittson County on January 10.

Shelley Steva and I saw a GREAT HORNED OWL, a BARRED OWL, GRAY JAYS, and
RED CROSSBILLS on January 5 on the Beltrami County part of Dick's
Parkway.

In Pennington County on January 6, Shelley Steva saw two flocks of
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Thief River Falls totaling about 300 birds. Here at
our feeder east of the city, a NORTHERN FLICKER has been coming to the
feeder for seeds and suet since January 4.

Six LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported by Shelley Steva on January 4 three
miles south of Oklee on MN 92 in Red Lake County.

Two BALD EAGLES were seen at a nest site in Polk County just west of
Erskine on January 4. Sandy Aubol had a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL visit her
home in East Grand Forks on January 5. On the 8th, she reported 6
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in her neighborhood.
Heidi Hughes reported a sighting of a SNOWY OWL in Polk County on
January 8 at 340 Ave NW and 170 St. NW.

Kristy May in Waubun, Mahnomen County, observed EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE,
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and
NORTHERN CARDINAL this week.

In Norman County, 3 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were seen southeast of Twin
Valley .

Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported on the Battle Lake CBC in Otter Tail
County, where 46 species were seen including 1041 TRUMPETER SWANS, a
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Ottertail, PINE GROSBEAK,
and RED CROSSBILLS. A VARIED THRUSH was found just west of the Battle
Lake nursing home. Brad and Dee Ehlers reported 8 AMERICAN ROBINS and 14
CEDAR WAXWINGS in a crabapple tree east of the Fergus Falls, YMCA on
January 8. Gary Otnes reported a first year female SNOWY OWL in
southwest Otter Tail County on January 9. Three HORNED LARKS were also
seen .

In eastern Wilkin County, another SNOWY OWL was seen by Gary and Marion
Otnes on January 9.

Benjamin Eckhoff reported on the Lake Carlos CBC done at Lake Carlos SP
in Douglas County on January 5. Among species seen were 67 TRUMPETER
SWANS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN COOT, 3 AMERICAN ROBINS, BELTED
KINGFISHER, 2 BROWN CREEPERS, and 4 BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS.
