This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November
17, 2016 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce.
You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or

The winter weather is on the doorstep now, with blizzard warnings in the
southern part of the area and cold winds here in the north. The counties
to the far northwest are not forecast to get much , if any , snow, but
the cold will come anyway. We can expect new avian arrivals after this
passes and feeders should be very active then.

This week in Hubbard County, Marshall Howe reported RED CROSSBILLS all
week, and two NORTHERN SHRIKES, one on November 13, another on November
16. He saw 35 SNOW BUNTINGS on November 17, and 50 BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS
on November 13. There are still some COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED
MERGANSERS, and BUFFLEHEAD in Hubbard County, and a few AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH and PURPLE FINCHES can be found.

Connie Cox reported that she had seen a SNOWY OWL in a field along the
Mississippi River near Itasca SP on November 8.

In Becker County , Marshall Howe saw a dark ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on
November 13.

Beth Wright reported a SNOWY OWL in Polk County on November 12, along CR
20 north of Sherack. Two COMMON REDPOLLS found the yard of Sandy Aubol
in East Grand Forks on November 15.

In Pennington County, I saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on November 17 in a
yard along Oakland Park Road in Thief River Falls .

In Lake of the Woods County, Jane Croeker saw COMMON REDPOLLS on
November 13.

Larry Wilebski observer a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and several BALD EAGLES
on November 13, one mile south of the Canadian border in Kittson County.

Thanks to all who sent in sightings this week.
