> Subject: Summer Tanager, Washington County seen today
>
> Today I finally (after more attempts than I want to admit) saw the Carpenter Nature Center Summer Tanager near the orchard, just before noon. I had checked the area surrounding the feeders without seeing the bird, so drove over to the "apple shack" (or store), just south of the Carpenter Nature Center. I stayed in my car on the west side of the apple shack driveway for about 10 minutes, then saw the bird fly to the bittersweet on the fence, along the opposite side of the driveway. It fed and perched in the sun for a few minutes, then flew away. I had an excellent look, and his blended colors were unusually brilliant in the sun!
>
> As soon as the tanager left, I heard the unmistakable sound of Sandhill Cranes. I looked up and saw at least 50 cranes flying over, heading southeast.
