This is the Duluth Birding Report for August 23rd, 2012 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The first PARASITIC JAEGER of the fall season was found on the 17th by
Erik Bruhnke out from the Sky Harbor Airport at Park Point in Duluth.
Erik also saw a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER on the 19th and the 22nd at Park
Point.

An impressive RED CROSSBILL irruption is underway across the region. The
record daily high count for the state was broken on the 19th when Karl
Bardon and others counted 365 flying overhead at Hawk Ridge. Other
recent sightings at Hawk Ridge include 19 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the
19th and 17 on the 21st.

Norma Malinowski found a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE on the 17th in northern
St. Louis County east of Ely at the Winton sewage ponds. A YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD was seen at the Castle Danger sewage ponds on the 23rd.
