This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 3,

It has been a very pleasant week in the northwest, though cool, but on
Thursday, rain came again. Bird migration appears to be over, but a few
stragglers are still coming through.

A few notable species were seen this week in the northwest. Brad Bolduan
found a male LARK BUNTING along CR 7 a mile east of Agassiz NWR
headquarters on Friday, May 28. The bird was also there on May 29, but a
short search for it on May 31 was unsuccessful.

Dave and Betty Hochhalter in Detroit Lakes, Becker County, had an
ORCHARD ORIOLE at their feeder this week.

In Norman County on May 27, Pat DeWenter found a SHORT-EARED OWL hunting
a little south of Fertile.

Adele Rosencrans reported a nesting BALD EAGLE about a half mile west of
MN 220 near the East Grand Forks WTP this weekend.

Anita Vettleson had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER visit her yard in Red Lake
County on June 2.

Linda Felker saw a SHORT-EARED OWL on the west side of US 58 just south
of Newfolden in Marshall County on May 27.

On May 29, Pat DeWenter relocated the BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along the
Bohall Trail in Itasca State Park in Clearwater County. Other species
seen in the county that day included EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, MOURNING
WARBLER, OVENBIRDS, and an EVENING GROSBEAK a the feeders at Bert's
Cabins.

The MOU Minnesota Birding Weekend in Cass County found a family group of
RED CROSSBILLS in the southeast corner of the county. Directions are S
off MN 210 on CR 36 a half mile W of the Crow Wing County line. When CR
36 curves west turn left, and go 0.25 mile to the open pine stand on the
east side of the road. 151 species were seen by the group on the weekend
including YELLOW RAILS at Swamp Lake, and NELSON'S SPARROWS at Swamp
Lake and also several at the Boy River Marsh. A few folks actually saw
both species. Other notable species in the list were BARRED OWL,
WHIP-POOR-WILL at Deep Portage, and three CONNECTICUT WARBLERS along CR
135 3.5 miles west of CR 65.

Linda Felker found a late WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW in Beltrami County on
May 24.

In Kittson County Linda saw 15 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, MARBLED GODWIT, and
WILSON'S SNIPE all north of Karlstad on CR 7 about 1.2 miles east of CR
14. At Lake Bronson SP she saw OSPREY, LARK SPARROW, EASTERN TOWHEE,
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and SCARLET TANAGER. Probable WILLOW FLYCATCHERS
were heard singing in the northern part of the county. County Road 51
goes north from CR 4, then turns left to head west. These birds were
heard along a dead end road( 275th St) going north from CR 51 where it
turns west.

In Roseau County, Beth Siverhus saw 24 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS in Warroad on
May 26. Other birds seen this week included LEAST FLYCATCHER, RED-EYED
VIREO, VEERY, CEDAR WAXWING, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and WESTERN
MEADOWLARK. Linda Felker found several WESTERN KINGBIRDS at Springsteel
Island.

Martin Kehoe reported TRUMPETER SWAN, SPRUCE GROUSE, BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKER, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER in Lake of the Woods County this
week. On May 30, he saw a LONG-EARED OWL along MN 72, and on May 31 , a
MERLIN at the Peace Park in Baudette.
