The first real thunderstorm arrived this week, dumping substantial rains
in the area. We are quite wet now, and mosquitos are sure to follow.
Nesting is well underway for the early nesting species, and goslings are
In Grant County, Charlene Nelson , saw a WESTERN KINGBIRD at the corner
of 200 St. and 240 Ave. on May 30, and an ORCHARD ORIOLE at Elbow Lake
on June 3.
In Hubbard County this week, Marshall Howe reported RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER at Dorset, and at Lake Alice Bog on June 1, YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, GRAY JAY, SEDGE WREN, and BLACK-THROATED
GREEN WARBLER. At Itasca SP, he saw a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and CANADA
Kay Hartness had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in her yard in Becker County on
In Clay County, Marshall Howe found GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, UPLAND
SANDPIPER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, MARBLED GODWIT, WILSON'S SNIPE, MARSH
WREN, and GRASSHOPPER SPARROW.
In East Grand Forks , Polk County, on May 31, Russ Wilbur reported
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN REDSTART, and
BOBOLINK. Emily Hutchins observed VEERY and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER near
Mentor that day. On May 29, I found three WESTERN GREBES at the Agassiz
Valley Impoundments east of Warren.
Sandy Aubol relocated the SNOWY EGRET originally found by Gerald
Hoekstra and others at the Agassiz Valley impoundments in Marshall
County on June 2.
Here is Pennington County, several COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen on June 4
hawking insects just east of Thief River Falls, and one was found
resting in a tree in our yard.
Marshall Howe in the Clearwater portion of Itasca SP this week found
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN PARULA, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and PINE
Beth Siverhus in Roseau County this week reported RUFFED GROUSE, SORA,
WILSON'S SNIPE, BELTED KINGFISHER, RED-EYED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO,
EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, LEAST FLYCATCHER, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN
PHOEBE, CLIFF SWALLOWS, BARN SWALLOWS, TREE SWALLOWS, 12 species of
warbler, and six species of sparrows. Warblers seen included
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, BLACKPOLL, PINE WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER,
AMERICAN REDSTART, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, OVENBIRD, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, NASHVILLE WARBLER, and
