This is the Duluth Birding Report for Friday, January 1st, 2010

The BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK at Pat Thomas's house at 6219 East Superior
Street continues to be seen daily, as recently as the 31st. Birders are
welcome to look for the bird, but are asked to limit the number of
visitors to five at a time and to stay between the driveway and the back
door while looking for the bird.

Peder Svingen saw a second-cycle ICELAND GULL and two GLAUCOUS GULLS on
the 29th at Canal Park in Duluth, and an adult ICELAND GULL, eight
GLAUCOUS GULLS, and two GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS at 27th Avenue West. At
the Superior landfill he saw a first-cycle ICELAND GULL, two first-cycle
THAYER'S GULLS and several GLAUCOUS GULLS. Peder saw a very late COMMON
LOON on the 28th at Leif Erickson Park. Mike Hendrickson saw a SNOWY OWL
on the 28th in the Superior harbor out from Barker’s Island.

Three LONG-TAILED DUCKS were relocated on the 28th at Burlington Bay in
Two Harbors, and a late-lingering female GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen at
Agate Bay. Mike Hendrickson found an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW on the 28th
at a feeder along Stony Point Drive. Bob Russell found a first-cycle
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and a first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL on the 30th in
the Grand Marais harbor.

Mike Hendrickson saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 28th along Lake County
Road 15 (FH 11) a mile west of the Beaver Creek Road. Molly Thompson saw
a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 27th on the Fox Farm Road (CR 266). Sandy
Roggenkamp saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 30th along the Three Lakes
Road (CR 49) about 1.5 miles east of US Highway 53.

A GREAT GRAY OWL and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER were seen by Mike
Hendrickson on the 28th in the Sax-Zim bog along the McDavitt Road (CR
233), 3-4 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). John Quinn saw a GREAT
GRAY OWL on the 30th on the Lavell Road (CR 230) at the Sailor Road.

Two GREAT GRAY OWLS continue to be seen by several observers in Aitkin
County as recently as the 29th along CR 18 near the Pietz's Road (320th
Place). NORTHERN HAWK OWLS have also been seen along CR 18 between the
Pietz’s Road and CR 5. A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found by Mike Hendrickson
on the 29th along MN Highway 210 about a mile west of McGregor, and he
saw another along MN Highway 200 at 250th Avenue east of Hill City. Mike
also saw ten SHARP-TAILED GROUSE at Kestrel Avenue and MN Highway 210.
