I just saw a pair of Greater Prairie-Chickens on a residential street just
west of Bush Lake in Bloomington. They were both females and possibly
were fledged this spring although they were adult sized with adult
markings. They were in the street and totally oblivious to cars -- I had to st
stop with one left and one right. I finally had to slowly drive between th
them. I was unable to photograph them due to traffic, etc.
I grew up on a farm in central Minnesota in the '50s and '60s when there
were still fencerows but I had never seen a prairie-chicken before. I am certai
certain of my identification but had no idea this species was living in such an urb
an urban location. The Bush Lake area has some native prairie restor
restorations but is mostly wooded so it would seem not the likely habitat.
