This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 6th, 2012 sponsored by
the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen by Mike Hendrickson on 3rd in the Smithville
neighborhood of West Duluth. It was flying overhead heading to the west.
Karl Bardon also saw a MISSISSIPPI KITE on August 27th at Hawk Ridge, as
well as a SWAINSON'S HAWK. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was banded on the 29th
at Hawk Ridge.

Karl and others at Hawk Ridge have been documenting a huge influx of RED
CROSSBILLS, with a record-high peak count of 1,252 on the 24th. Single
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen on the 3rd and the 5th and the first
SANDHILL CRANES of the season were seen on the 4th. A FRANKLIN'S GULL
was seen flying west over Hawk Ridge on the 1st.

Mike Steffes saw a flock of more than 20 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS fly
over Castle Danger on the 27th. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen on
the 30th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.
