This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 26th, 2009
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at 21 East College Street in Duluth was
relocated by Brad Snelling on the 26th. It had not been seen since
January 29th, and Brad reports that it seems to appear at his feeders
primarily when it is snowing. Everett Reynolds found a NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWL on the 21st near 42nd Avenue East and Superior Street in Duluth. An
injured GREAT GRAY OWL was picked up on the 19th along the Lavaque Road
(CR 48), a mile north of the Martin Road (CR 9). Julie O'Connor saw an
early AMERICAN KESTREL on the 24th along U.S. Highway 2, about 0.5 mile
west of Proctor.

Dave Grosshuesch saw two GREAT GRAY OWLS and two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS on
the 25th along CR 110 south of Aurora. One Great Gray was just north of
Bird Lake and the other was about 0.75 mile south of the road to the
Skibo Lookout. The Hawk Owls were about 2 and 3 miles north of the Skibo
Lookout.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was relocated by several observers during the past
week along MN Highway 61 at the Knife River crossing. Peder Svingen
found a first-year ICELAND GULL and two GLAUCOUS GULLS on the 20th at
Kendall's fish house along Scenic Highway 61 in Knife River. He also saw
a fourth-cycle GREAT-BLACKED GULL at the mouth of the Talmadge River
east of the McQuade Road safe harbor. On the 23rd he saw a flock of 57
LONG-TAILED DUCKS along Scenic Highway 61 west of the Homestead Road (CR
42) near the Nokomis Restaurant.

Bill Stahley found a BOREAL OWL on the 26th in his yard near Grand
Marais. Jason Caddy found a BOREAL OWL on the 22nd along 1st Street in
Two Harbors. Jason also reported an extremely early COMMON LOON on Lake
Superior in front of the lighthouse.

Peter Neubeck relocated the NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Carlton County on the
14th along MN Highway 73 near mile marker 27, just north of Cromwell.
