This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 31st, 2013 sponsored by
the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

At least three SNOWY OWLS have been seen recently in the Sax-Zim Bog.
One was along CR 7 near the greenhouse and Dibble Road, one was along
the Stone Lake Road, 1.5 miles east of CR 7, and another was seen at the
Zim Road and Greenfield Road. The SNOWY OWL at Riley Road west of
Jean-Duluth Road in Duluth continues to be reported, as do a few SNOWY
OWLS in the Duluth harbor in and around the Port Terminal and I-35.

NORTHERN HAWK OWLS have been seen recently in the Sax-Zim Bog along Owl
Avenue south of the Arkola Road (CR 52), and along the Stone Lake Road,
1.5 mile east of CR 7. Another NORTHERN HAWK OWL has been seen in Duluth
along the Lester River Road in the fields north of the golf course, and
one has been seen intermittently on the north side of Two Harbors along
CR 26 at CR 2.

Tim Glackin saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 26th along Lake County Road 2
about two miles south of Forest Highway 11 (CR 15). A GREAT GRAY OWL has
also been reported recently near the Admiral Road feeders in the Sax-Zim
Bog, about 3.5 miles north of the Cranberry Road.

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are still being seen in Ely especially along Miner's
Drive and Washington Avenue, and in the town of Winton. EVENING
GROSBEAKS and PINE GROSBEAKS have also been reported in good numbers in
Winton. JG Bennett saw EVENING GROSBEAKS on the 26th at a feeder two
miles north of CR 12 at the junction of Holm Road (CR 124) and Old
Drummond Road (UT 10), northwest of Two Harbors.

Thank you to Mike Hendrickson for his recent compilations of many of the
sightings in the area.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on February 13th.
