We are enjoying summer in the northwest this week, and young birds are
doing silly things as they learn to live their lives. Not a lot is
happening here as far as sightings go, but there are a few things to
report.
Two immature SABINE'S GULLS were found by Marion and Gary Otnes in a
slough south of Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County on July 27.
Here, east of Thief River Falls in Pennington County, the RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS continue to come to our feeders. This week the entertainment
has been as many as a dozen BALTIMORE ORIOLES, most of them juveniles,
who are rapidly consuming the grape jelly. Tonight they scrapped over a
bunch of grapes that I put out.
Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks reported a PEREGRINE FALCON that flew
over her house on July 29. On July 25, Russ Wilber saw two RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS on a dead tree on the west side of the bike path that runs
by the campground in East Grand Forks. Sandy Aubol also reported
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS with young near the Point bridge on July 27.
Other species seen there included an immature BALD EAGLE, BALTIMORE
ORIOLES and several species of sparrow.
Steve Midthune reported on July 25 that Bisson Lake in Becker County is
hosting several species of shorebirds in migration including LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, LEAST
SANDPIPERS, BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, WILSON’S SNIPE, and
WILSON’S PHALAROPES.
