This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 25,

Hot weather has arrived and with it, both mosquitos and storms. The din
of baby birds is increasing in the yards. All sorts of nesting species
have fledged or are feeding young in the nest this week.

Beth Siverhus and Gretchen Mehmel found a male NORTHERN CARDINAL in Lake
of the Woods County along CR 2 south of Baudette near the Beltrami
Island Forest line this week. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was also there.

In Roseau County during the last two weeks, Beth reported a long list
seen and heard on her breeding bird routes. The highlights were WESTERN
GREBE on Lake of the Woods, nesting GREEN HERON, TURKEY VULTURE, SORA,
MARBLED GODWIT, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, HERMIT THRUSH, BROWN THRASHER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, LE
CONTE'S SPARROW, 12 species of warbler including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER,
MOURNING WARBLER, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER, SCARLET TANAGER, INDIGO
BUNTING, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

Here in Pennington County, a PURPLE FINCH has been singing loudly in the
yard, and on June 22, I heard a BARRED OWL calling along the river. Ron
Erpelding reported a LEAST BITTERN in the slough east of CR 10 on the
county line with Red Lake County.

In Red Lake County on the other side of the road, another LEAST BITTERN
was heard. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen along CR 3 south of Dorothy,
and also a juvenile ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in Red Lake County.

Sandy Aubol reported that more than 70 EARED GREBES were seen at the
East Grand Forks WTP on June 20. All were busy building nests. Also
there were a COMMON GOLDENEYE, WILLET , and WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

The MBW group led by Kim Eckert last weekend found a NELSON'S SPARROW on
150th Ave one mile west and 0.2 mile south of Waubun in Mahnomen County.
LE CONTE’S SPARROWS were also there. Ian Hunter reported a NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH in the Waubun School Forest on June 18. An EASTERN TOWHEE
was found by Ron Erpelding near Pine Bend on the weekend, and a juvenile
ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in Waubun.

Roy Zimmerman in Becker County with the MBW group found a MUTE SWAN at
Bisson Lake along CR 14. Ron Erpelding reported a BLACK DUCK at
Calloway, and also a LEAST BITTERN in Becker County.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was reported by Charlene Nelson in Douglas County
along MN 27 east of Hoffman on June 22.

Charlene Nelson found an UPLAND SANDPIPER along MN 27 west of Hoffman in
Grant County on June 22.
