ATOM has allowed me to see the text code unadulterated and helped me troubleshoot; I've managed to achieve what I wanted to:

I am adding stage coordinates to an existing *.spd file already containing a sample reference position. I'm calculating the new positions, relative to the reference position, in Excel after spd import; then saving to tab delimited text file; then opening in Notepad to remove extra space added by Excel between all text via Find/Copy/Replace; then re-saving the file to remove the *.txt at the end of the filename; then opening in ATOM to check that there is one extra line at the end of the code (and modifying if I need to); and then re-importing into PC-SEM.
