*What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? *

Salary: $105,335 (Step 01) to $136,936 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to
the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

This position is being advertised concurrently with SAC-2018-0247, open to
current or former Federal employees.

There is one vacancy; however, this announcement may be used to fill
additional vacancies if they become available.

*Responsibilities *

*As a Research Geologist within the Volcano Science Center’s (VSC’s)
California Volcano Observatory, some of your specific duties will include: *

Conduct scientific research principally using the electron-microprobe and
scanning electron microscope (SEM) to understand volcanic events and
magmatic processes.

Apply broad knowledge of geology, geochemistry, computer software, and
microanalysis to determine the formation conditions (pressure, temperature,
oxidation state, volatile abundances) of igneous materials produced by or
related to volcanic eruptions.

Develop new electron-microprobe and (or) SEM/EDS analytical techniques to
measure elemental concentrations and spatial distributions accurately and
precisely. Results obtained using the newly developed analytical and
imaging methods will be used to model the temperature, pressure, duration,
and melt chemistry responsible for magmatic activity and products.

Manage electron-microprobe and SEM laboratory accounts, scheduling, and
agreements with service technicians; perform day-to-day instrument setup
and minor maintenance; advise, train, and assist inexperienced instrument
users.

Prepare comprehensive scientific reports on the results of the research for
publication or administrative use.

Author publications, peer-reviewed journal articles, and/or other products
of considerable interest to science and/or technology in the area of
specialization.

Present results of research at scientific meetings, professional societies,
interagency meetings, and before the general public.

*Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B
below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade
levels. *


   - *Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an
      accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree
      in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in
the degree,
      it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester
      hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological
      science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering,
      computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics,
      meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology,
      and cartography. *

*OR *


   - *A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A"
      above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional
      semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses
as specified
      in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional
education for
      a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and
experience must
      be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through
      successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A"
      above. *

*For the GS-13 level: In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed
above, applicants must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at or
equivalent to the GS-12 level that is in or related to the duties described
above, such as: planning, originating, and conducting original and creative
research, both fundamental and allied, in petrology using
electron-microprobe methods to assess volcanic hazards or (and) magmatic
processes. This experience is typically performed at the post-doctorate
level. *

*This experience must have shown creative and outstanding research that has
led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research. The work
must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle,
product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of
basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline
or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method
of solving problems, opening areas of research or providing the means of
exploring the application of science in a major area. *
