*Post description:* The Department of Geology (
invites applications for a laboratory manager/analyst in the academic
position of an Instrument Scientist (IS) / Senior Instrument Scientist
(SIS) / Chief Instrument Scientist (CIS) starting on 1 January 2016 or as
soon as possible thereafter. The Instrument Scientist (EPMA) is responsible
for all analytical, technical, administrative, and financial obligations
related to the management of the Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer (EPMA)
laboratory and represents it within and outside Rhodes University.

*Requirements:* For the IS level candidates must have at least an MSc in
mineralogy, petrology or a related field and substantial experience in
operating EPMAs (including standardisation and instrument calibration). For
the SIS and CIS levels, a PhD in a relevant field and laboratory management
experience are necessary.

*Job context and obligations:* The main purpose of the position is to
support and facilitate the research of an academic department through the
management, maintenance and use of the EPMA and related equipment. The
training and supervision of post-graduate students and other instrument
users is an important part of the job obligations. The position offers
abundant opportunity for post holder’s own research. The laboratory is
equipped with a 2011 model of a JEOL JXA-8230 EPMA with four WDS
spectrometers and a CL detector. SEM-EDS is available as a separate
instrument in the Electron Microscopy Unit elsewhere on campus. The EPMA
was commissioned in March 2012 and has been productive and well utilised
