I lose the cursor over the PfE window while using windows remote. While upgrading the JEOL computer to Windows 10 to get the correct resolution monitors set everything through the video card software and the resolutions problems get resolved. I don’t recall having to do this in Windows 7 you could use either.
I got the TeavViewer threat even though I have a TeamViewer license go figure.
Had to set up remote control remote viewing so new operators could be trained and maintain social distancing. Our IT used TightVNC, free for both personal and commercial use.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Re: [PROBEUSERS] [sx50-users] Online resources and remote access options
Dear microprobers,
Reviving this thread that went trough both the Cameca and the JEOL microprobe user’s list…
TeamViewer finally targeted me with a threatening message about their new EULA and how I was illegal with my lab account, and how expensive their “deal” was… So… I was all wrong hoping I could keep my “freeware” version… And so... Good bye TV!
BTW, when they say “non-commercial” that actually includes any need of the software for your work - even as a teacher or researcher (i.e., you are paid for your work, you receive money, and so, this is “commercial”… whatever… Money is money, but it still has no taste).
I ultimately switched to a combination of RemotePC (WAY cheaper than TV, even if you need 2 or more computer controls), as already suggested by others [ANETTE!!!! THANK YOU!!!], and a complement with the native Windows Remote Control. Less convenient and with some more technical issues than TeamViewer but it fits my needs as a lab manager…
I’m actually having one issue with one of my three remote-controlled lab computers, where I get a totally black screen after a successful connection (despite being truly connected, i.e., the mouse is moving on the remotely-controlled computer when I move it on my computer, but I still don’t “see” anything on the remotely-connected computer).
If anyone has seen this bug, I’d be glad to hear your advice! The WWW mention this issue on several forum; I’ve tried changing screen resolution, switching to optimal resolution vs speed, disabling Aero mode, etc. but nothing solve the problem. Except maybe one: I wonder if this is a problem with my graphic card with 4K capabilities and the driver / software that comes with it (fancy gaming-style AMD graphic card - ever since I installed Windows 10, Windows is regularly warning me of some issue with my graphic card and screen resolution / wrong refreshing frequency, even if I don’t see any actual problem… except of course when I connect remotely with this black screen… Coincidence?). Any idea / similar issue on your side???
I “solved" this black screen issue by actually having a primary remote-control connection to the main probe computer and then have a “Windows Remote Control” connection to my local connection to the other computer (Probe for EPMA). It works like a charm. It’s like inception: a remote-control in a remote-control. More convoluted than earlier with two distinct TeamViewer connection, but it works! See attached screenshot, BTW taken on a Mac!
Cheers,
Julien

Dear all,
Greetings from home. I discover only now through this thread that TeamViewer is becoming effectively... costly. In their EULA they still mention a “freemium” version, which I guess is only the demo version valid for 2 weeks. I actually haven’t receive (or rather paid attention…) to any warning coming from TeamViewer that I should now pay something. When I connect on TeamViewer, my online account is still written as “free” - I have version 15.1 installed on my Mac (and similar on the probe computers). There is still an official active link to the older 100% free older version (14 and below) for those who are interested:
https://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/previous-versions/
I would love to hear from other solutions people find (remotepc: I might give it a try…). It would have been useful now that It-Who-Must-Not-Be-Approached is around, but of course all our instruments are shut down since over a week now. Safety and good health first!!! Time for writings I guess, hopefully the editors won’t be submerged with thousands of article submitted in less than a month :)
BTW, Anette, many thanks for putting together all these useful links! …and to mention my class notes. I hope it will remain active for a while (it is at my old lab at CU, so far they haven’t changed the lab website). In the meantime, please, add also Mike Jercinovic’s name aside mine, as several slides comes from him (with minor changes + more of my own stuff…).
Also, feel free to add the De-MA website (Database of electron Microprobe Analysis - maybe to be renamed Database of Electron MicroAnalysis in a near future…). A working example is at http://ethz.geoloweb.ch<http://ethz.geoloweb.ch/> and I have a new one in construction at http://de-ma.ch<http://de-ma.ch/> that will be opened to multiple laboratories to register with (more on that later… when it works all properly… but it will be free :P ), and I hope to have it functional sooner or later (and I also need to work on the FIGMAS website... :).
Take care everyone!
Julien

Hi all,
Greetings from the other land of political ineptitude.
When Teamviewer changed their policy we looked at the other options, but decided in the end that it was worth paying for a service we knew and loved.
However, I will say this. The quality of the product seems to have gotten worse now that we are paying, which seems a bit backwards. We pay for one shared license, which is a pain if more than one person needs to access a machine remotely (ie the processing computer and the probe comp). It also seems to time out more and have more issue connecting than it ever did before. Not sure if this is their fault or if our IT has gotten better at blocking teamviewer, but there it is.
Stay safe everyone,
Phil

Hmm, interesting about TeamViewer. I have been using it pretty regularly for the last year or so with no problems, and no change in the non-commercial use policy. At least for now, our IT people have not had a problem with it, but maybe it has just been overlooked (fingers crossed). Good to know there might be some good options so thanks Anette! Thanks also for the online resources, but I did just try the NAU class note link only to get the dreaded 404 page not found. I could probably make my course notes available too, but they are currently in a secured box account, so basically a non-public platform. Not to drift too far from the intended thread, but I did a google search for something a few months ago and found to my amazement several slides from my old notes pop up in "images" that had been used by someone not in academia and used with out permission or attribution, just claimed it was their own. I know it's just the way it is today, and we all probably "borrow" too liberally, but it was a little disconcerting.
Anyway, maybe it's time for us to consider a new community course as a lot of you have gone through a lot of effort to construct nice lecture materials! Obviously this would take some time commitment from a number of people who already have too much to do. I also know John D. will see these posts and tell us to move this to the forum!

Hi Anette,
Thanks very much for this information, this is very helpful (not to mention timely). To add one thing, I was unaware of TeamViewer's new subscription model, but my institution has recently started blocking all TeamViewer connections due to security concerns. I know that TeamViewer has been the go-to software for remote instrument use for quite a while, so if anyone has been using it or is thinking of starting, it may be a good idea to check with your IT folks to make sure that it will continue to work for you going forward.
Hoping everyone is staying safe and healthy.
Best regards,
OKN

Dear all,
apologies for the crossposting. I am sure we are all in a similar situation in that we have to come up with a way to handle our labs and potentially teaching in the coming weeks.
I wanted to start a discussion and also share a list of online resources again that I accumulated over the years. Maybe some of the webinars can do in a pinch to substitute for a lecture while you can develop your own online content.
You can find it here: http://avdhandt.umn.edu/microanalysis/useful-links-microanalysis
While I have essentially shut-down the use in my lab for now, I want to give students the option to still remote access their data to process it. My preferred software "Teamviewer" recently moved to a very expensive subscription model.
While there are many VPN options, I wanted a solution that works across many platforms and also allows me to give one-time access to users.
I am now using "Remote PC" ( (https://www.remotepc.com/). It runs on PC/Mac/Linux/iPhone/iPad/Android and fits all my needs so far. They offer an academic discount (I pay $35/year) but they also have a good promotion right now (I am not affiliated etc..).
I was also looking at Supremo (but didn't try) and there seem to be new options emerging constantly in this rapidly developing market.
So, I hope this is helpful and if you have something to share, please let us know.
Stay healthy and take care!
Anette
