Hello,
On our JEOL 8900R we have one TAPJ and two TAP crystals.
When we measure Si simultaneously on all spectrometers, the two TAP crystals have intensities within 2.5% of each other.
However, the TAPJ crystal has Si intensity 10 to 12% higher than the regular TAP crystals.

My understanding is that TAPJ refers to the Johansson geometry of the thallium hydrogen phthalate crystal.
Best regards,
Andrew

Johansson crystals give better resolution over the entire spectrum but are more expensive due to the difficulty in manufacturing.
If I recall correctly, on one of my trips to the JEOL factory, they were hand lapped to get the correct curvature. So there was some loss due to breakage/damage.
