Workshop Themes

There will be eight themes with two running simultaneously in four
sessions.

1. What difference does the size of the population in decentralised
areas have on the level and type of participation?

2. What motivates people to become involved in decentralisation
initiatives?

3. The role of ideology in decentralisation initiatives.

4. The role of direct elections on participation levels and the
intensity of participation.

5. What do those who participate in decentralised bodies hope to
achieve?

6. What differing roles are played by factors such as education,
gender and social class in participation levels?

7. Does the scope to exercise differing levels of authority and power
in decentralised bodies impact on levels of participation?

8. Do different decentralised functions or services attract differing
levels of participation?

The conference will focus on initiatives in public participation
within broader developments in governance at the local territorial
level. Adopting comparative and case study approaches, the conference
will enable developments in public participation in a number of
countries to be compared. Papers will address the affects of cultural
differences, as well as considering the impact of different government
structures on the types and outcomes of public participation
initiatives. Papers will draw lessons from local initiatives, in
specific regional or national settings. Papers will address empirical,
as well as theoretical and normative considerations. It is intended
that an edited book will be published, based on the conference papers.

The conference fee is £260, which includes accommodation and catering
throughout the event. If you are interested in attending, please fill
in and return the attached booking form as soon as possible.
