Men’s Mental Health

Gendered experiences can have a large impact on our mental health. While
this week’s newsletter focuses on the general experiences of men, we
acknowledge that intersectionality of gender/gender identity and other
forms of identity greatly impacts each person’s unique lived experience and

A Convo Can Save a BroAs stated in past newsletters, Movember
<https://us.movember.com/> is meant to be bold and put a spotlight on men’s
health issues just like a mustache emboldens a face. In this edition we
want to highlight the stigma around men’s mental health. Men’s mental
health is impacted by gendered experiences. Men are 4x more likely to die
by suicide than women,1 yet it is reported that women are twice as likely
to experience major depression;2 moreover, this could be because men are
less likely to report their depression or because they are misdiagnosed due
to differing symptoms experienced by men. LGBTQ+ men are even more likely
to develop mental health disorders than heterosexual men due to many
environmental/societal factors and pressures.1
The ALEC Method While we encourage everyone to speak up when experiencing
feelings and symptoms of depression, Movember encourages people to use the
ALEC method to check on friends, family, and others who may be showing
signs of depression.

   -

   Ask: Mention a change you have noticed, then ask if they are okay. Do
   not hesitate to ask twice.
   -

   Listen: Give them your full attention without interrupting. Silence is
   often awkward but embrace it. You can ask follow up questions to show you
   are listening.
   -

   Encourage Change: Suggest healthy actions and encourage them to talk to
   others and/or professionals.
   -

   Check-up: Plan an activity and a follow-up. If you can’t meet, then take
   time to call.

Services (SCS) specializing in graduate student mental health and
programming. All of our clinicians at Student Counseling Services have
prior experience working with graduate students and understand the unique
cultural considerations that are linked to being a graduate student. I was
a Gopher for both my undergraduate and graduate educations, and love every

NAMI Connections Group for Law Students

The NAMI Connections group offers peer-led support for law students living
with mental health disorders who attend any Minnesota law school (UMN Law,
St. Thomas, Mitchell Hamline).

NAMI Connection is a recovery support group for adults with a mental
illness regardless of their diagnosis. (Aka… you don’t need an official
diagnosis to join us). This group is offered free of charge and is led by
trained individuals who are also in recovery – people who understand the
challenges folks with mental illness face.

Who: Law students living with mental illness (No diagnosis required)

What: Peer-led support group!

When: 2nd & 4th Mondays of each month; 4:30-6:00pm
