Four responses to Andrew Reynolds query on G. Berthold:

From: James Strick <[log in to unmask]>

Try looking in V. Kellogg's 1908 book DARWINISM TODAY. I don't have it
in front of me but I'm pretty sure it's discussed there, along with
pangenesis, perigenesis, ids, biophors, etc., etc.

Dear Dr. Reynolds,
here are some details on G. Berthold.
Gottfried Berthold (16 September 1854 - 7 January 1937), professor of
Botany at the University of Göttingen, author -- among others of course
-- of 2 monographs of the series "Fauna and Flora of the Gulf of
Naples", edited by the Stazione Zoologica di Napoli,.

In 1886 he published: "Studien über Protoplasmamechanik". Leipzig, A.
Felix, 332 pp., 7 plates.

Sincerely,
Christiane Groeben

From: Robert J. Robbins <[log in to unmask]>

In his book, Heredite, 2nd ed. (sorry, no accents - plain ASCII email
system), Yve Delage offered a summary of more than 20 different
nineteenth-century theories of heredity. In that book there is a brief
(few pages) summary of the "Theory of Berthold".

A facsimile version of excerpts from that book are available at
http://www.esp.org/books/delage/heredite/facsimile/

The piece on Berthold begins on page 521.
