The more relevant and straightforward issue is this:

There simply are not enough well-trained modern microscopists of
any sort available! To my knowledge, there are lots of jobs and very
few qualified people looking...

This is something people I train find out quickly when they look for
jobs (or even beforehand when they are approached by companies while
still employed!!).

To all the semantically inclined,

as a recent posting of mine concerning a job opening in my laboratory
caused some unexpected stir, I feel compelled to add a few remarks:

-- The reference to "preferential consideration" of women and
handicapped applicants is a legal requirement for any advertisement of
any government-paid job in Germany

-- While the wording might be (mis)interpreted in different ways, as
very often is the case when you attempt to state a complex issue rather
briefly, I am satisfied to see that all of you obviously understood what
was meant

-- Of course, you may call this "affirmative action", but since an
equivalent expression does not exist in Germany, and since this is a job
at a German -- not U.S. -- university, it would not make any sense
whatsoever to introduce this expression, as it has no legal standing in
this country

-- The Ruhr University Bochum is not an "unequal opportunity employer",
as some of you suspected. By German law, female applicants and those
that are
handicapped have to be "preferentially considered". This does n o t
mean
they have to be "preferentially hired". All it means is that, according
to German law, you have to give female and handicapped applicants an
extra careful look, and you have to state specific reasons why you might
have turned down their applications in favor of a male, non-handicapped
person. This is a reasonable demand which simply requires you to do what
should come naturally anyway, but unfortunately too often does not: to
hire people without regard of gender or handicapped status, provided the
applicants are equally qualified for the job at hand. I trust that none
of you are having a problem with that principle.

Sincerely,

Michael Hollmann
