There will be an infomal meeting for students to meet with Dr. Gary
Schoolnik (2003 Spink Lecturer) in Room B620 Mayo from 11:00-11:45 a.m. =
on
Thursday, April 10th.

This will be an opportunity for students to get to know a celebrated
professor from Stanford prior to his talk at 12:15 p.m. Spink Lecture in
2-690 Moos Tower: "Spread of the White Plague in the Third World: using =
DNA
microarrays to explore mechanisms of latent tuberculosis"  A light lunch
will be served.

Gary K. Schoolnik, M.D., is Professor of Medicine in the Division of =
Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at Stanford University =
School of Medicine. =20

=20

Dr. Schoolnik received his medical degree from the University of =
Washington Medical School and completed his residency in Internal =
Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Research training in =
Infectious Diseases and Microbiology was gained at the Rockefeller =
University and the University of Washington before he joined the faculty =
at Stanford University School of Medicine where he is also Professor of =
Microbiology and Immunology. =20

          Dr. Schoolnik's research interests include the molecular =
pathogenesis of bacterial diseases, development of vaccines and =
application of molecular methods for study of epidemiology of infectious =
diseases. =20

=20

Global health has been a long-time concern of Dr. Schoolnik.  In 1983, =
he began collaborative research with the Mexican Health Ministry =
studying enteric infections in children.  He established the Stanford =
Center for Health Research at the Institute for Biotechnology in =
Cuernavaca, Mexico and currently has field research projects studying =
cholera and tuberculosis in Bangladesh as well as in Mexico.  =20
