Hi John,
Thanks for letting us know that you have now ported "Probe for
Windows" over to 8900s and 8200s -- that is still a rather recent
announcement, and I'm sure that is news to some folks here. I know
your software has some options not available under the JEOL propriety
software, notably choice of more than a half dozen matrix correction
routines, multiple options for determining background positions,
combined conditions for analyses (JEOL has this on 8200s), and
multiple peak search options with different ways to model the peak
centroid. I'm sure there are more...
I have to question the first half sentence I quoted above, though.
When last we discussed the costs of switching over to "Probe for
Windows" in July, the basic software package was roughly $30K with
more for the PC workstation, EDS/WDS integration, advanced training,
and mapping (another $15, give or take a few $K).
As I mentioned on this listserver, we've contracted with JEOL to
upgrade our workstation to a c8000. Our total cost of this is about
$16K. It would be higher if we didn't have a service contract and
weren't trading in our old HP workstation, but it would be lower if
we chose to upgrade to the b2600 -- about $12K. It seems that a JEOL
upgrade is less than half of what "Probe for Windows" costs.
Granted, we will have no real increase in functionality (other than
bells and whistles like CD and DVD drives, dual monitors, faster data
processing, etc), like we would with migrating to "Probe for
Windows" instead.
Nevertheless, it seems that claiming PfW's "cost is a fraction of
what JEOL charges for their upgrade" is just incorrect. If, though,
I am missing something and have made a mistake, please feel free to
correct me.
