Hosted by our National President and Director of Student Programming, this
workshop for 12-15 participants will focus on Global AIDS, professionalism,
and PharmFree initiatives. To be effective leaders in society,
physicians-in-training must develop skills to create positive change in
their local communities and the larger health care system. The SLI is an
innovative one-day opportunity for student leaders new to AMSA to learn
skills for effective leadership in community organizing, legislative action
and project development.

Following announcements from the National officers, Regional Conference
Staff, and Regional Trustees, we will introduce Paul Davis, MD, our keynote
speaker. Dr. Paul Davis of the Health Global Access Project (GAP) Coalition
and contributing author to the book SICKNESS AND WEALTH: The Corporate
Assault on Global Health. Dr. Davis is a national leader in the fight for
equitable health care access worldwide.

Tina Wu, the AMSA Global Aids Fellow, will speak on AIDS and why it should
matter to you. A former Fulbright fellow and a UCLA medical student, Tina
has taken the year off from to work in the national AMSA office full time. =
She
is working to mobilize the nation's physicians-in-training to address the
HIV/AIDS pandemic through education, service, and action.

David Adkins, JD is the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs at the
University of Kansas Medical School. He will speak on health policy at the
state level. He recently joined the KU administration after four terms in
the Kansas House and one term in the Kansas Senate. Most recently, Adkins
was vice chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee and chair of the
Senate Reapportionment Committee. During his eight years in the House, he
was chair of the Appropriations Committee, chair of the Select Committee on
Higher Education, and chair of the Taxation Committee.

 Norm Hess of the March of Dimes will discuss the lobbying process. As Stat=
e
Director of Program Services for the Greater Kansas March of Dimes, he has
worked closely with the Kansas Legislature to expand preventative measures
important in pediatric care.

workshop and questions and answer session.

 Eleanor Lisbon, MD, will present information on the Dramatic AIDS Educatio=
n
Project. Awarded the Ribbon of Hope Community Service award, this unique
collaboration utilizes medical students from the University of Kansas and
the University of Missouri and Coterie professional actors as trained AIDS
peer educators. Using dramatic monologues, slides, and music, a medical
student and a Coterie actor portray HIV-infected teenagers to educate teens
about the transmission and prevention of AIDS. The Dramatic AIDS Education
Project served over 90,000 students since 1999.

 Premedical Student Panel. Presented by students from the University of
Kansas Medical Center and facilitated by Sandra McCurdy, Associate Dean for
Admissions.

Courtney Bellamo, the National AMSA Action Committee Chair for Advocacy wil=
l
present an interactive seminar on what is l live as a person with physical
handicaps. It will be an enlightening and unique experience. Move to

 Jaydoc Free Clinic Executive Board Members will share their insights into
the special challenges and rewards that come from running a free clinic. Th=
ey
will provide ideas to take home to existing clinics in the region and give
advice on how to get a clinic like this started.

 Marcia Nielsen, PhD, MPH, will present a lecture on the Grassroots Activis=
m
and a tutorial on how the political process really works. Dr. Nielsen has
recently been appointed by the Kansas Governor to chair the new Kansas
Health Policy Authority. At the University of Kansas Medical Center she
serves as both a faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and
Management as well as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Policy and
Governmental Affairs. She has served a both an Army reservists and a Peace
Corps Volunteer. She worked for a decade as a lobbyist in Washington, DC fo=
r
the AFL-CIO.

Humanism in Medicine. Annastasia Kovscek, MD is another member of national
office staff that has taken a year off from training to work for AMSA's
goals. She is the director of student programming and feels strongly that
medicine is about treating the whole patient and all of his or her needs. S=
he
also believes that the culture of medicine can be detrimental and we must
practice self-care to be able to provide the best care for our patients.

 Sandra McCurdy, Associate Dean of Admission at KU, will present a session
for the premed about everyone's favorite topic, getting into medical school=
!

 Debra Sullivan, PhD, RD, LD, will talk about patient nutrition, and the
gaps in patient care surrounding that issue. Dr. Sullivan is Adjunct
Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Science=
s
and Assistant Professor in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at KU.

The Lost Boys of Sudan are a panel of Sudanese refugees that will discuss
the special concerns of their community. Jump Start Sudan is a
not-for-profit organization based in Olathe, KS that provides basic relief
supplies to war-torn and neglected Southern Sudan . They conduct one
Christian medical mission trip each year. Move to Courteney's spot

 Region 8 Project. Matt Fishel is a medical student at the Kirksville
College of Osteopathic Medicine. He's leading a new project regarding the
problem of teenage pregnancy and is excited to tell us more about it. Move

This morning's keynote is Saranya Kurapati of Physicians for Human Rights
will discuss what every doctor and medical student can do to ensure that
every patient receives the best possible care. As a student, she has been a
national leader and healthcare advocate in the fight for human rights.

Asha Goud, Region 8 Trustee, will talk about the history of student advocac=
y
in AMSA. She'll give you lots of ideas and opportunities to get involved
with the largest student-run medical student organization in the world.

 Michael Fox, ScD, will discuss the state of veteran health care in the
United States. The Veteran's Administration is the best example of universa=
l
health care in our country. However, in this time of increased need, the
budget has been repeatedly reduced. Dr. Fox an associate professor and
currently interim chair in the Department of Health Policy and Management,
and Research Director of the Research and Training Center on Independent
Living at the University of Kansas. He has a joint appointment in the
Department of Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Kenneth Peterson will talk on the subject of stem cell research. KU
officials have been working closely with the Kansas Legislature on this
topic. Dr. Peterson is Vice-Chairman and professor in the Department of
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and professor in the Department of
Anatomy and Cell Biology at KU.

 Dr. Michael Kennedy will discuss Covering the Uninsured in the United
States. He is a dynamic speaker and sure to motivate the audience. He is a
member of the Physicians for a National Health Plan and Kansas Academy for
Family Physicians Foundation Vice President. He is director of the year one
clinical skills course and director of Student Health Services at KU.
