Hey AMSA,

I just got this forward about the Children’s Health Security Act, which is
a bill to make sure that all children in Minnesota have access to health
care. It’s going into a House committee hearing this Thursday. Please call
to let your legislator know that you support this bill and want him or her
to support it as well! Read on for talking points and directions on how to
figure out who your legislator is (go to http://www.cdf-mn.org/CHSA.htm for
more information).

Help Keep Children’s Health Security Act Moving in the Legislature House
Hearing on Thursday!

Thanks to your support, the Children’s Health Security Act, which would
ensure all Minnesota children have access to affordable, quality health
care is moving in both the State House and State Senate. Last week, the
bill passed out of its first Senate committee at a hearing many of you
attended. This week a similar House committee will likely vote on it. Your
calls and support have already made a difference. We need your continued
help to ensure that it keeps moving.

Here’s what you can do:

1) Attend this week’s House Hearing on the Children’s Health Security Act.
The House Health and Human Services Committee will take up and vote on the
measure on Thursday, February 8 at 2:15 p.m. in room 200 of the State
Office Building near the Capitol. Come, bring a friend, and help fill the
committee room to show your support for this important bill that will
ensure all Minnesota children access to health care coverage.

2) Call Your Lawmaker: There are already 52 supporters of the legislation
in the House, and the Senate bill has its full allotment of co-sponsors
(others can still sign on in support). You can find out if your Senator or
Representative supports the bill and how to get in touch with them by
accessing CDF Minnesota’s CHSA Action Center at
http://www.CDF-MN.org/CHSA.htm.

When you contact them: Ask your Representative to sign on to the Children’s
Health Security Act (HF 1 - introduced by Rep. Paul Thissen). If they’ve
already signed on, thank them! Ask your Senator to contact Carole Specktor
at 651-855-1188 to sign on as a supporter of the Children’s Health Security
Act (SF 15 - introduced by Sen. Yvonne Prettner Solon). (Note: Only five
Senators can officially sign on to a bill, so CDF and the Children’s Health
Security Act Coalition members will talk to any Senator who wants to be
listed as a supporter of the legislation. CDF will keep a running list of
all the Senate supporters.)

Here’s why we need them to act.

Minnesota has more than 68,000 uninsured children—enough to fill 1,360 full
size school buses, or to fill every seat in the Metrodome with thousands
more still standing. These children—many under 6 years old—are missing key
immunizations, checkups and preventive care in their important
developmental years. While most states have reduced their number of
uninsured children, Minnesota has gone in the opposite direction. This is
costly to our state both in the short term and in the long run.

Your Feed Back is helpful: Please contact Norma Bourland at CDF Minnesota
if you take action at [log in to unmask] or call 651-855-1186.

CDF Minnesota Director Jim Koppel and State Senator Yvonne Prettner Solon
testified in favor of the Children’s Health Security Act shortly before a
key Senate Health Committee passed it last week. The bill will now move to
other Senate Committees for action. Similar action is being taken in the
House.
