Subject: [mou-net] Snowy Owl in Grand Marais

On Saturday Nov 22 we observed a Snowy Owl in the Grand Marais harbour. I am
not sure if this is the same bird that was reported in early November. We
first found it perched on the breakwater at the west end of the harbour
(near the trailer park) but it quickly flew eastward to the shoreline near
the docks in front of the Coast Guard station (where it could be viewed from
the parking lot) and then on to the tip of Artist's Point. The bird had
fairly dense barring and the only visible area of pure white (when perched)
was the face and a small bib. The back of the head was barred. A photo of
the perched bird suggests that the barring is lighter on the back than on
the wings, which gives the appearance of a dark band encircling the back of
the bird when perched. This all seems to suggest a female but I have not
seen a Snowy before and did not take notes. If anyone has further ideas on
the sex or age, or wants to see a bad photo of it, let me know.

Cheers,

Matt
