Yesterday two reports of a Varied Thrush in the same area of Ely were received. On Saturday and Sunday morning an adult male varied thrush was seen at the bird feeders located at 1252 E. Washington Street in Ely. Later on Sunday, a report was received of the bird visiting a feeder one block over at 1220 Main Street.

At both houses the bird feeders are easily viewed from the street and therefore if try to see this bird there is no need to enter the yard.

Norma Malinowski and I visited the house across from the "Pillow Rock" on Main Street this morning and saw the varied thrush visit the feeders and the birch tree next to the house three times. There is a pull off just east of the "Pillow Rock" that provides good viewing of the feeders. The area across Main Street from the house is forested and brushy. The bird would feed for usually less than 5 minutes and then spent about 40 minutes in the cover provided across the road. So be patient while you wait and watch.

There were also pine siskins, black-capped chickadees and white-breaseted nuthatches at the feeders while we were there.

There are some other feeders at other houses in this area that are also very visible from the streets.
