Announcing The CJ Online Survey of Perceived Quality of PhD Education in
Classical Studies

Available February 15 – April 15 2009 at
http://classicaljournal.org/survey.php

The Classical Journal invites professional academics and graduate students
in the classics and closely related fields to participate in an online
survey intended to assess the perceived quality of PhD education in
classical studies in the United States and Canada, and thus to offer
guidance to undergraduates interested in graduate study in the area. This
is not an “objective” evaluation of library resources, publication
records, placement results and the like of the sort carried out by the
National Research Council. Instead, we are concerned with participants'
subjective sense as to which programs do the best job of training PhD
students in the field generally, as well as in the specific areas of Greek
and Latin literature, Greek and Roman history, and Greek and Roman
archaeology. Rankings will be limited in number and positive; participants
will not be asked to "vote against" any program or to rank all programs in
the field.

Results (including breakdowns by demographic and professional categories
and by preference for different ranking criteria) will be announced via CJ
Online, and will eventually be posted at classicaljournal.org.

Participation is restricted to individuals who either (a) hold a PhD in
classical studies or a closely related field, AND have at some point held a
teaching position in the United States or Canada; OR (b) are an MA or PhD
student in an American or Canadian graduate program in classical studies or
a closely related field. You may participate in the survey only once. In an
effort to encourage as wide a participation in the survey as possible, we
encourage you to forward this announcement to colleagues and students.
