On both Saturday & Sunday this past weekend, Oct 30-31, a female-
plumaged Harlequin Duck was seen in Grand Marais, Cook Co., and 2 imm
Red-throated Loons appeared there today, Nov 1. The Harlequin Duck was
seen by >20 birders participating in the so-called annual "Muffin Run"
field trip up the North Shore: on Saturday afternoon it was in the
harbor near the E breakwater, and on Sunday morning it was relocated
just outside the harbor by the W breakwater. And the Red-throated
Loons were seen by 5 of us this morning as they swam and dove on L
Superior not too far out from the W breakwater. Viewing conditions at
the time were excellent with calm winds, a smooth lake surface, and
the sun to the E with the loons mostly to the SW of us.

Other highlights seen up the N Shore this past weekend by our group
included:

- 2-3 Surf Scoters, Grand Marais
- 32 White-winged Scoters, near Five Mile Rock; also 1 at Taconite
Harbor
- 20 Black Scoters, Paradise Beach; also 2 in Two Harbors and 1 in
Grand Marias
- Long-tailed Ducks, various locations, with largest flock near Five
Mile Rock
- imm Golden Eagle, Stony Point
- 2nd-winter Thayer's Gull, Grand Marais (Nov 1)
- 4-5 Black-backed Woodpeckers, various locations
- 2 Townsend's Solitaires, Two Harbors: 1 near Agate Bay lighthouse, 1
near 1st St. & 3rd Ave.
- late Clay-colored and Savannah sparrows, Grand Marais

Finally, Barb & Denny Martin just called to report they relocated the
Pacific Loon reported last week in Duluth. It was on the lake side of
Park Point out from 31st Street.
