While looking for for the Pacific Loon on Fishtrap Lake in NW Morrison County we came across a first winter Summer Tanager. First spotted by Herb Dingman the three of us were able to study this bird for several minutes. It left the crab apple tree we spotted it in when we weren't looking but we are guessing it may have been because it was getting toward dusk. We believe that this is a first county record.

The bird was seen at 2441 County Road 3, which is about a mile and a half east of the intersection of County Road 3 and County Road 20, just off State Highway 10, on the north shore of Fishtrap Lake. There are two crab apple trees in the yard and the bird was in the one by the door to the house. Both trees can be seen from the road and if you need to you could walk down the driveway a short distance, with permission from the owner.

We had gotten permission from the homeowner to look out at the lake from his shoreline as we looked all over the lake looking for the Pacific Loon. We saw at least 11 Common Loons and no Pacific Loon. Earlier in the day we saw a single White-winged Scoter on Green Prairie Fish Lake. See Milt Blomberg's earlier post for directions. The bird was down on the east end of the lake, keeping company with a Canvasback, a Ring-necked Duck, three Cackling Geese, and many many Canada Geese. Again we had to get permission from a property owner to access the lake as the park and public access were on the west end of the lake. Start with the park and if you can't see it then go the the east end.
