Matt and Ellery,

Unfortunately I have never operated a JEOL probe, however on the SX50  
there are several components that are checked during the warmup and  
pump down routine. In the vacuum section of the drawings different  
flowcharts are provided (to show the different pump-down routines  
depending on where you start from) and so some of the components that  
are checked include the position of the gun valve, the position of the  
solenoid valves (both vacuum isolation valves and air inlet venting  
valves) diffusion pump power and temp, and if the pirani gauges are  
operating properly.

I have experienced pirani gauge problems in the past that were due to  
backstreaming some RP oil, in the end a thorough by gentle cleaning of  
the pirani with some Naptha solved our problem. Hopefully JEOL has  
laid out a flowchart to assist with narrowing down where the problem  
may be.
