The temperature dropped to -10F this morning. Feeders at the Audubon
Center were very active with the usual birds - juncos, goldfinches,
Black-capped Chickadees, Downy and Hairy woodpeckers, Red- and
White-breasted Nuthatches - plus a surprise Brown Creeper (feeding on
sunflower chips) and a handful of Common Redpolls.
Out on the prairie, I spotted a Northern Shrike hunting from the power line
that bisects the property, and a male Great-horned Owl in the tree line
east of the barn/visitor center. I also spotted a Bald Eagle, 2
Rough-legged Hawks and a female Harrier on the north side of 190th Street
NW by the Agassiz Valley impoundment today.
Late yesterday afternoon, I got a call from an Arctic Cat employee who
spotted a Snowy Owl on his way home from work (2:30am) 2.5 miles north of
Warren on US 75. And on the drive from Warren to Crookston at 2:30pm
yesterday, I spotted 5 large flocks of Snow Buntings (easily 100 or more in
each flock).
