In addition to some of the N Minn winter specialties already reported  
by others recently on MOU-net, the Minn Birding Weekends group found a  
few species of note this weekend, Jan 7-8:

- A lone male Spruce Grouse was present this morning 2.3 mi N of the  
Sand River (i.e., ~44 mi N of Two Harbors) in the traditional area on  
Lake Co Rd 2. (Other observers had also seen grouse on other recent  
days along this stretch of Co Rd 2).

- That Northern Hawk Owl which was at Gooseberry Falls State Park on  
Jan 4 apparently could not be found by anyone there on Jan 5 or 6;  
however, we relocated it yesterday along Hwy 61 in the area where it  
was originally found last week - i.e., 1.3 mi NE of the state park  
entrance near the Gooseberry Trailside Suites sign. (Because this is a  
busy highway, it is suggested that birders use common sense and  
caution when looking for this owl.)

- A well-marked female Hoary Redpoll (i.e., relatively unmarked) was  
coming to the feeders today at 9440 Hwy 1, which is ~1 mi W of  
Isabella on the N side of the highway. (Numerous Pine Grosbeaks were  
also present here, and a few Evening Grosbeaks made a brief  
appearance.) We also observed another female Hoary yesterday at the  
Blue Spruce Rd feeders in the Sax-Zim Bog, 1 mi N of St Louis Co Rd 133.
