At 5:45 this evening on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, Hennepin County I observed a first-cycle Glaucous Gull. I was scanning the lake with my scope through the 1500 + Gulls blanketing the middle of the lake when to my surprise a 1st cycle buffy-tan GLGU popped into my view. It's larger and bulkier size than the surrounding Herring Gulls, its long, heavy bi-colored bill ( pink with solid black base), and dark eyes were seen clearly. It distinguished itself when it flapped its wings and revealed its underwing was two-toned with translucent flight feathers. I continued to enjoy watching it splash and bathe and when it settled in a side profile showed the folded wing-tips paller than the rest of the plumage.
It was a warm, calm evening with good light and the Lesser Black-backed, and Franklin's Gull were also present. A perfect night to be out until dark when Gulls were still streaming in.
