Today, 12-19-2015, 3 Short-eared Owls were seen on NE 84th Street, about 1
mile south of Highway 12 in Merton Township in NE Steele County. They were
seen and photographed (alas, a cell phone camera) by three experienced
birders during a Christmas Bird Count. It all happened about sunset. At
times they were on the east side of the road in very good light. On two
occasions they landed on the the USDA steele posts and gave us great views.
They were as close as 150 feet at several points in time.
