Andrea,
When I worked at JEOL, we had a 733 with the Noran pre-amps and SamX software.
Usually the issue was noise on the cables to the pre-amps. Wiggling them usually returned them to normal.
But I did find on more than one occasion that the SamX hardware/software was the culprit. Might try shutting down the software and cycling the hardware.
