                       Call For Presenters

29TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
                           SOCIETY

Reflections and Visions on The Learning Community

   _July 26-30, 1997
   _Athens, Georgia U.S.A._[1]_

The Community Development Society[2] invites you to attend and
participate in its 29th Conference, July 26-31, 1997 in Athens,
Georgia. Your involvement is important to CDS to encourage and
facilitate the exchange of ideas, information, observations, and
expertise among individuals and organizations engaged in or
concerned with community development as a vehicle for change in our
   everyday lives.

The 29th annual conference theme-__Reflections and Visions on the
Learning Community__-provides the opportunity for communities to
look back on what has been done and proclaim what needs to be done
in the future! The accomplishments in communities around the world
have been many and we want to provide a meeting which encourages us
to celebrate our successes while we collectively create a vision
for the future of community development. __Reflections and Visions
on the Learning Community__ will provide a special forum where we
share our perspectives and experiences. Come be with us as we
contemplate, celebrate, dream, and action plan. _We invite your
   participation in the following areas:
   _

   __1. Workshops__

Interactive learning sessions with colleagues about existing and
new theories, concepts, practices, and techniques and procedures
for promoting outreach and community development locally,
regionally, and internationally. Formats might include
success/failure stories, case studies, role plays, debates,
simulations, and a variety of audience participation methods.
Topics could include work-in-progress, think pieces, controversial
issues, and group decision making in face-to-face or other
   interactive formats.

   __2. Presentations__

Completed and on-going theory or practice work in community
development you wish to share with peers. Presentations could
include detailed, well-developed concepts, policies, applications,
results, conclusions, and follow-up schemes which have an impact on
   community groups and development processes.

   __3. Exhibits__

A visual display set up for the duration of the conference. Display
may be stand alone, or with discussants with information about
communities, organizations, chapters, sections, projects, programs,
case studies, or publications. Exhibitors will be asked to staff
displays periodically during the conference such as during breaks
or specially designated exhibit viewing times. Exhibitors from
outside of the United States are encouraged to check customs laws
   regarding shipping of displays.

__4. Community Based Problem Raising, Discussion and Dialogue
   Sessions__

Participants will have the opportunity in a one-half day concurrent
session of problem raising and discussing with peers,
practitioners, and community residents in a face-to-face
facilitated session with interested communities. The session will
be designed to raise concerns and describe problems so that CDS
participants and community members will be able to discuss mutual
interests and share information about current dilemmas and
problems. Selected communities will present a scenario about their
situation and participants will discuss, dialogue, and offer
suggestions for improvements or change. Several concurrent sessions
with community scenarios for discussion, dialogue, and problem
solving will be offered in a facilitated session.

   __5. Roundtable Breakfast Session__

Participants have the opportunity to submit nominations of topics,
ideas, models, practices, theories, observations, policies, and
related issues with their peers in a small group setting of up to
eight people in a breakfast roundtable format. Nomination
information should include ideas about how to recruit participants
   to these breakfast sessions.

_Other opportunities for participation at the CDS meeting:
   _

   __6. Section Meetings__

Carrying on the tradition of section meetings, from Melbourne and
other CDS meetings, each of the CDS "interest sections" will have
opportunities to explore community development issues and concerns
through their section interest perspective. A two-hour time period
will be set aside during the conference for each section
(concurrently) to meet and discuss ideas, practices, and issues of
mutual concerns. Proposals selected will be those that best argue,
demonstrate, or propose how sectional interest and/or activities
contribute to community development relative to the conference
   theme.

   __7. Swap Market__

An opportunity for free exchange of Community Development Stuff.
There will be free space to give away your papers, tapes, programs,
and books to the inquiring minds of community developers who might
   be interested in sharing.

   __8. Lobby Sessions__

At the registration desk each participant will be given an
opportunity to list ideas or concerns that they have, and would
like to engage others in informal discussion during breaks or
evening meals on their own in Athens. Look for ways of listing a
   lobby session at registration.

information and instructions regarding your presentation. _All
presenters are required to register for the conference_. CDS does
not pay registration fees or other conference expenses of session
presenters or exhibitors. CDS review committees have the authority
to place sessions where they are considered to be most beneficial
to the membership. Please follow these guidelines when preparing

dialogue sessions. Exhibits and roundtable breakfast sessions need
only complete 1-3 of the guidelines. Section meetings and the swap
market will have designated meeting times. Lobby sessions will be

Relating your proposal to the theme of _Reflections and Visions
on the Learning Community _is desirable, but not essential, or a
      criteria for selection.

submit proposals on an IBM compatible 3 1/2" diskette in
WordPerfect 5.1 or 6.0 for Windows. Label diskette with name of

projects such as a youth program or an economic development project
in the region. Please be as specific as possible about what you
