who are interested in subscriptions, or in submitting their latest
scholarship for publication, or in volunteering to referee submitted

Subject: Hist Sci survey reading list

I am putting together a year-long undergraduate survey in the history of
science, technology, and medicine. Over two semesters, we will traverse
(mainly Western) human culture, from the Babylonians to molecular genetics.

I welcome any suggestions of texts and readings to use in this course. What
have you used? What has worked well? What hasn't worked well? I will be
happy to compile the results and post them here, if others are interested.
My current plan is to assign a general Western Civ. text, such as McKay,
Hill, and Buckler's A History of Western Society, and supplement this with
readings and text in the history of science, technol. and medicine. I have
used Lindberg's history of science up to the Scientific Revolution as a
supplemental text and plan now to assign it as a required text.

Major topics include:

Babylonian and Egyptian astronomy
Greek Science
Roman Science and Technology
Islamic Science
The Middle Ages
Scientific Revolution
18th and 19th C. science and medicine
20th C. -- physics, biomedicine, technology, etc.

Please give as complete information as you can--publisher's info would be
most welcome (though even just title and author would be useful).

Also, has anyone used the HSS syllabus guide? It is mentioned on the HSS
website with no description. Before I shell out $10, I would like to hear
from anyone who has used it about what it includes, whether you found it
useful, etc.

Since this mailing list is distributed infrequently, I would appreciate
direct replies, or being cc'd if you reply to the list.
