CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE
8th INTERNATIONAL PLANNING HISTORY CONFERENCE and 4th AUSTRALIAN
PLANNING/URBAN HISTORY CONFERENCE
'THE TWENTIETH CENTURY URBAN PLANNING EXPERIENCE'
An end-of-the-millennium exploration of the legacies and lessons of a
century of urban planning
UNIVERSITY OF NSW, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 15-18 JULY 1998
The response to the call for papers initiated in July has been exceptional.
The original deadline of 1 December 1997 has now passed. Over 180 proposals
from nearly 40 countries have been accepted. These range widely across and
beyond the suggested themes of paradigms, policies and politics, plans and
planners, spaces and places, cultural heritage, environmental management,
and social impacts. Other innovative groupings have also suggested
themselves from the wealth of offered papers.
The December deadline for abstracts was designed to encourage early
submissions and facilitate the development of a draft core program. It was
not an inflexible date after which absolutely no papers would be accepted.
Various requests for extensions have been received. Recurring reasons have
been the pressure of end-of-year commitments, the timing of research and
travel grant applications, continuing uncertainty about research and travel
plans in mid-1998, and belated discovery of the conference.
Accordingly, the deadline will be extended to the end of February 1998.
However, earlier indication of your intentions would be most helpful. Later
submissions in extraordinary circumstances will not be ruled out. But please
note that the deadline for receipt of papers prepared to detailed layout
specifications remains 1 APRIL 1998. This is to ensure sufficient time for
the production of conference proceedings to be made available when you
arrive at the conference venue.
Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and carry your name,
position/affiliation, full contact details, and succinct paper title.
Abstracts are being used as an informal refereeing mechanism and as a
programming tool. They will not be reproduced for general distribution.
The full conference registration fee is likely to be $Aus350, covering
everything (admission, proceedings, lunches, refreshments, reception, and
Sydney area fieldtrips), except the concluding conference dinner at a
prestige central city venue on Saturday evening 18 July 1998 and the 3 day
post-conference bus trip to Canberra. Various concessions will apply for
'early bird' registration, for members of the International Planning History
Society, full time students and retirees.
There have been previous postings about the conference. More detailed
information on travel arrangements, accommodation, and sponsors is on the
conference internet homepage at:
