We are in the process of developing and implementing a Ph.D. program in
public policy. During the course of our discussions, several issues arose.
I'd appreciate thoughts on the following:
What is better---a 4 year or a 5 year Ph.D. program? Ours is intended to
serve people interested in jobs in and out of academia. Concerns have been
expressed that 4 years are inadequate to do course work, get teaching
experience, get conference presentations and publications, and complete a
dissertation. On a related matter---would those aiming at non-academic jobs
be better served with a 4 year program? To what extent are publications
important for job placement in non-academic settings?
I thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
